Dec. 9-10, 2012 - Cape Town, SA

Dec. 9-10, 2012 - Cape Town, South Africa

Arrived in Cape Town on the evening of the 8th after shark diving.  On the 9th the Red Bull Flugtag was held at the V&A waterfront.  This is a competition where teams create gliding aircrafts, push them down a short run way off a huge boat and into the water.  The idea is to see how far your arcraft will glide.  Most teams aircrafts simply fell off the edge of the boat and didnt get anywhere.  They all had costumes, a little dance, and a theme to their aircraft.  Kinda funny to watch.  The waterfront had a festival feel to it with 1,000s of people out to watch this event.  We stayed at the waterfront all day.

On the 10th we headed out to Simons Town to see the penguin colony.  It was an hour train ride down from Cape Town.  But the penguins were sooooo cute! And Simons town was a cute little town itself, with a little downtown full of shops and delis and bakerys.

We also had dinner with and said good bye to the folks on our truck. All of them but us 3 end the trip in Cape Town.  Kirsty and Tom - Good luck in Australia.  Bob and Kathy - see you in Thailand.  Sophie and Gemma - Safe travels.  Joe - Dont work too hard when ya get back to work.  Mehmet - Keep adventuring.  Manny and Susanna - take care of my hippo!

What I have learned:
The African pengiun (AKA Jackass penguin) are the only species of penguin to breed on African soil.
The have a 21 day molting of their feathers every year.  During this period they do not eat.
