Dec. 3, 2012 - Dune 45, Namibia

Dec. 3, 2012 - Dune 45, Namibia

Today was our earliest day yet.  We had to be up and ready to go at 4:30am.  Dont worry there was sufficient reasoning for this.  We all wanted to hike up dune 45 (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_45) to see the sunrise.  I have mentioned in previous posts the difficulty in walking up a mountain of sand.  The same goes for this hike as well.  It took a good 30 minutes of sand mountain hiking to reach the top, BUT as if on command 2 minutes after sitting and getting comfy on top of the dune the sun peaked its head above the horizon.  It was truly a beautiful sight.  Giant sand dunes surrounded us in ever direction and red reflection was radiant against the yellow sun.

Our truck driver, probably sensing our morning moods, had hot water ready for tea and coffee as we reached the bottom and toast was going on the stove.  Yum.  It was chilly and beautiful and relaxing at the bottom.

On our trek down the road, Tim, the driver, pulled over to show us the largest social weaver (a bird) nest he knew about.  HUGE! No telling how many birds lived in this nest.  It took up almost the entire tree.

What I have learned:  Deserts really are beautiful if you have plenty of water and sunscreen.
