May 31, 2013 - Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Poland

May 31, 2013 - Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Poland

Today Piere and I toured Auschwitz.  There were 3 camps to Auschwitz.  Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II (Birkenau), and Auschwitz III.  Auschwitz III was destroyed by the Germans to try to cover up the evidence. And the gas chambers at Auschwitz II were blown up for the same reason.  We toured Auschwitz I and II.

The Nazi's would even keep the hair from the women they murdered.  They would send it off to be used to make textiles.  We werent allowed to take pictures there but one room was full of human hair that was ready to be shipped off when the Soviet's liberated the camp.

Auschwitz II

What I have learned:  At Auschwitz alone over 1,100,000 people were murdered during WWII.
People were shipped in cattle rail cars to Auschwitz.  If they were fit to work they stayed in the camp.  If they were too old, too young, or pregnant they were sent straight to the gas chambers.  And they wasn't a quick death.  It sometimes took up to 30 minutes to kill everyone.  They killed hundreds of people at one time.
