September 21, 2013 - La Paz, Bolivia

Jim arrived to the Loki Hostel in La Paz around 6:30am.  I met him in reception, got checked-in and then we went back to bed for a couple hours.  Poor Jim had to fly all night and got very little sleep.

However, we still made it to the free walking tour at 10am.

The Blue Shirt Free Walking Tour started at the San Francisco Church.

Then to a colorful pedestrian street known for its museums.

Then to the main plaza.

We stopped for a local snack.  An empanada type thing with meat, potatoes and other veggies.  You also had a choice of 5 different sauces to add to it and every bite could have a different sauce. Yum.

We then visited the San Pedro Prison.  You are no longer allowed to go inside for tours but we still stopped outside and got a little history on the place.  Supposedly this is where the best cocaine in Bolivia is made.  The families of the inmates are allowed to live with them and they can also have their own little businesses within the walls of the prison.  Its even said that the inmates can pay the guards for a day out of the prison.  A book was written by a journalist documenting his experience in the prison.  "White Powder" has been added to my reading list.  Funny, the book has been banned in Bolivia.

We walked through the food market.

Then the Witches Market.  Where you can get a llama fetus to bury under your home for good luck.

Our last stop was the outlook point over the city.

That night we went to an American style steakhouse and had what could potentially be our last meal before riding (and dying) on the Death Road the next day.

Eeeekkk Death Road tomorrow!!!!!!!!
