October 11, 2013 - Colonia, Uruguay

October 11, 2013 - Colonia, Uruguay

On the 11th Alene and I took a ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia, Uruguay.  It was only a 1 hour ride but the waters were REALLY rough.  Lots of folks ended up seasick.  Fortunately, I dont have motion sickness issues and I just slept the whole way.  But the rough seas and perhaps a combination of other things left Alene feelings less than 100%.

After an hour or two though and after narrowly escaping death from a crazy driver, she was good as new.  Though she did feed the dogs her breakfast.  Lol (she is gonna reallllly love that Ive added this to the blog).

Anyways, Colonia has a SUPER cute historical area and we spent the day wandering around and looking at the sights.

The town has left old cars in many different spots and has decorated them or put plants in them.

And of course we ate.

Then we climbed the light house.

AND THEN we rented a golf cart/mule.  Haha.  How could we turn down the opportunity to drive a golf cart on major roads for just $10/hr?!?!?  We had a great time navigating through town seeing some of the sights further away.

This is the old Bull Fighting Arena.

October 9, 2013 - Iguazu Falls, Argentina

October 9, 2013 - Iguazu Falls, Argentina

At 8:30am we shared a taxi from the hostel to Iguazu Park with a Spanish guy for 67 pesos round trip.

We got to the park and bought our 170 pesos entrance ticket.

Then we had alllll day to explore the park.  Our first stop was the upper falls trail.  Argentina has done a great job on getting you as close as possible to the falls. The trail follows closely along the falls and you can walk right along the edge.  It is spectacular.

Our first views of the waterfalls left us in awe.  Both Alene and I have seen Niagara and Victoria falls and we both agreed that Iguazu surpasses those by far! Stunning.

We had signed up for a nature drive and then boat ride into the falls yesterday. So, at 10:15 we gathered at the meeting point of the nature drive.

The forest surrounding Iguazu is actually the most bio-diverse location in all of Argentina.

After the 6k drive it was time for the boat ride.  The part we were most excited about! I have a few pictures but since Alene has a waterproof camera she got some of the best ones.  I have stolen those photos to add here. Thanks Alene!

They gave us a life vest and a dry bag and warned us we would be soaking wet by the end of it.  Luckily, we were prepared and had worn our swimsuits!

The boat starts down river from the falls and has to motor through some class 3 rapids to get to the falls.

They take you to one side of the falls.

 Then to the other.

And then they drive you right up into the falls! Crazy awesome (and lil scary).

Then they take you back to the other side and drive you into those falls as well.

After the ride they let you off at the bottom of the falls.  Since we were soaked and needed some time to dry off before putting our dry clothes back on we pulled out our box lunches and enjoyed the scenery.

Next up was the lower falls.

And then the Garganta del Diablo or The Devil's throat.  We took the train back to the top.

Unbelievable. The pictures just dont do it justice.

The last part of our day was a slow boat ride down the river.

 A few more waterfalls.

We returned to the hostel around 6pm.  Chilled for a bit then walked to the bus station to catch our 7:15pm bus back to Buenos Aires.
