October 19 - 30, 2013 - Sheep Ranch, Patagonia, Argentina

October 19 - 30, 2013 - Sheep Ranch, Patagonia, Argentina

Trenton and his friend Zev were waiting for me at the bus station in Comodoro on the evening of the 18th.  We dropped off my stuff at the hotel then went out for a late dinner.

I met Trenton through mutual friends from univeristy, Jen and Gavin.  We went on our very first backpacking trip together.  Back in 2007 we traveled over 5 weeks through all of Central America.  Since then we have only seen each other in foriegn countries.  We met up once in Turkey in 2010 and have now met up in Argentina!

On the 19th we headed the 5 hours south along the coast to the ranch head quarters.  Once we turned off the main highway it was an hour on a dirt road out to the house.  If you havent deduced it yet, that means the house is out in the middle of nowhere.  The only electricity is a generator that runs a fews hours at night.  And the only heat comes from a wood stove.  There was hot water though! Score!

Over the next week and a half I spent a lot of time travelling around with Trenton to several different ranch locations (he is managing 11 separate ranches in the Patagonia area).  Along the way we saw lots and lots of sheep (of course), guanacos, rheas, and amazing sunsets.  We drove fence lines, checked out windmills, and hunted guanacos to feed the dogs, and we ate lots of homemade tasty food.

On the 26th we drove 5 hours further south to Rio Gallegos.  Here we dropped off Zev so he could continue his travels.  And before we had to pick up Trenton's boss we headed down to Cabo Virgenes, the most Southern point on mainland Argentina.  It was a VERY bouncy 3 hour drive out to the Cabo (Cape).

There was a historical cemetary.

But the highlight was the huge penguin colony found near the beach.

Well, that and the view.

It was also the start of the Pan American Highway.

We picked up the boss and headed back towards the Ranch.  The next few days we traveled to more of the ranches and saw more amazing sunsets and small towns along the coast.

Some towns have guanacos pulling Santa's sleigh! ha!

Overall it was a great experience.  Although it involved a lot of road time, I got to see lots and lots of Patagonia, meet some real guachos, and hang out with my good ol friend Trenton.

Thanks again Trenton for having me as your guest!
